What are Genital Warts?

Genital warts are small or large bumps found anywhere in the genital area.

They are upraised to the touch and may appear white or flesh-coloured. They are usually fleshy smooth and cauliflower-like.

What causes Genital Warts?

Genital warts are caused by different strains of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). The HPV that is responsible for the warts is transmitted through genital fluid transfer and genital skin contact. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to have penetrative sexual intercourse to become infected. Condoms and other barrier methods only offer limited protection against infection. On rare occasions, there can even be transmission during childbirth.

Where can Genital Warts be found?

They can be found anywhere from the Suprapubic area to the scrotum and the shaft of penis.

Sometimes, they can be located near the frenulum or the head of the penis.

How can I tell if I am infected by the HPV(Human Papillomavirus)?

Normally this group of viruses do not produce symptoms and most people are oblivious that they are infected.

However, within 1-3 months of initial infection, you may note a small cluster of small or large fleshy bums in the skin or mucous membranes of the genital area.

Are Genital Warts painful?

Genital warts are usually not painful, but they can cause mild discomfort and itching.

Can I get tested to see whether or not I have Genital Warts caused by HPV?

Unfortunately, there is no test available in Singapore that has the capability to test for HPV strains that cause the occurrence of genital warts.

What are the treatment options available for Genital Warts in Singapore?

Of course, getting rid of genital warts would be high on your list of priorities. Fortunately, there are several options to choose from in Singapore:

Topical Creams

These creams contain active immune enhancers that stimulate the production of substances called interferon and other types of cytokines. You should apply your creams at night for maximum results. This medication needs to be washed off in the morning since it is not meant to be kept on the skin. Also note that there may be irritation, redness, or skin discolouration where the cream was applied. Of course, if your irritation becomes severe let your doctor know. He or she may ask you to discontinue the use of a particular cream and experiment with another.

Resin Applications

This medication is a topical solution that your doctor will apply to the affected area. It works by inducing necrosis i.e. killing the wart. There is no need to worry since this is a painless treatment. If the treatment has proven to be effective the wart will fall off naturally in 3-4 days after the application. There are occasions when the wart does not drop off. Instead, it shrinks in size. On these occasions, the treatment needs to be repeated. The solution stays on your skin for 4-5 hours. After this time has passed, your doctor will ask you to wash it off. Prolonged exposure to the solution may cause damaged skin in the genital area. It is important to note that this treatment is not recommended for pregnant women.

Cryotherapy

This treatment entails your doctor freezing the wart using extremely low temperatures. You may be wondering how is this achieved. It is done by using liquid nitrogen. So that there are no surprises, you should be aware that you may feel pain or discomfort. Again, if the cryotherapy worked, the wart should fall off in the next few days. Similar to topical treatment, you may notice the wart shrink in size instead of falling off. In this case, a repeat treatment may be necessary.

Electrocautery

This is another treatment that basically burns the wart off. The result is immediate. The process is performed by first applying a local anaesthetic. It is usually injected into the genital area to lessen the pain of the procedure.

Other Surgical Treatments

CO2 lasers are usually used on larger warts. Wart Removal Singapore is accessible at our clinics.

HPV and Cervical Cancer

High-risk HPV viruses 16 and 18, in particular, can trigger dangerous changes in cervical cells. This can lead to cervical cancer. As such we recommend that your female partners get themselves screened for HPV and also get regular Pap smear tests.

It is also important to note that these high-risk HPV subtypes also have the potential to cause changes in the rectal/anal mucosa. As such men who engage in anal intercourse may be at greater risk of cancer.

Do Genital Warts recur?

Unfortunately, genital warts will occur after successful treatment for many patients. As such repeat treatments may be necessary.

Are there any vaccinations for Genital Warts in Singapore?

The Gardasil 9 vaccine is available for men. It helps prevent genital warts, anal and penile cancers that are caused by certain strains of HPV. You will be required to take the vaccination in 3 doses.
